Val and I are now volunteering to distribute Good Food Boxes in our neighbourhood (we’re at Charles and Balmuto St). We got our first order today, and the veggies are fantastic—I thought I’d share the contents of a large box in case you’re interested:
(cat not included!)
Contents:
- 4 corn (peaches & cream)
- 1 cucumber
- 1 pint of blueberries
- 1 celery
- 3 lb of potatoes
- 1 2L basket of peaches
- 2 zucchini
- 2 tomatoes
- 1 bunch of bananas
- 1 watermelon
- 1 bunch of broccoli
- 1 romaine lettuce
- 1 bunch of spinach
The contents change with each delivery, depending mostly on what is in season. Most of the veggies are local, and they can be organic if you wish. The large regular box (above) costs $17; there are boxes from $12 (small) to $32 (large organic).
If you live in the area and would like a box send me an email! The next order arrives in two weeks.
But no cat? 😦
No, no cat—not in season!
The UofT women’s centre used to do this too … Spadina and Russell street. May be more convenient for folks who live out that way.
To be honest I found the two of us didn’t manage to finish everything in the regular box. But probably we don’t eat enough vegetables. I think it’s a great program though, it’s awesome you guys are volunteering.
That’s good to know, Neil, thanks.
I should’ve said, if there’s people interested in getting the food box but live in a different area, you can email Food Share (gfbox@foodshare.net) to find the nearest distribution point from your place.
Hey you two…I used to do this awhile back! It’s a great way for me to actually eat veggies! Occasionally you’ll get some unexpected & unusual surprises!
Enjoy
Yeah, we have so much healthy stuff in our fridge now that we’ve no excuses not to eat it.
If you want to get back to eating your veggies let us know! 😉
I had a Good Box for two years before moving to Mtl, I think is the same organization and the money for the food goes to help the recovery of former drug addicts, I wonder if that is the case with yours, my contact was an aristocratic lady called Jane A., the nicest person ever.
